About the role

As a Conductor, you’re not just a member of the Customer Group; you’re the face of V/Line, ensuring every journey is safe, smooth, and enjoyable for our passengers onboard the train. Your role is crucial in delivering top-notch customer service and maintaining high standards on our regional trains across Victoria.

By showcasing your initiative and knowledge of V/Line policies, you’ll ensure the safety and satisfaction of our passengers, contributing to V/Line’s success and revenue protection.

Conductor work on rotating rosters. Shifts can begin as early as 3:30 AM and may also end at 3:30 AM.

Depending on scheduling and business needs, you may be required to sign on and work at various stations along the North East line within 80km of your Home Depot (Seymour).

Key Accountabilities include:

Customer Service & Information: Be the go-to person for passengers, providing assistance and information to customers face to face, and via a PA system

Train Preparation: Ensure trains are ready for service, from cleanliness to functionality

Fare Management: Handle ticket sales, checking tickets, and provide fare advice during train services.

Platform Duties: Oversee train departures and assist with luggage at stations

Coach Duties: Manage coaches during planned and unplanned disruptions and events

Fault Reporting: Manage and report any equipment or facility issues

Emergency Management: Be prepared to handle service disruptions and emergencies

The role is highly autonomous therefore you’ll possess a level of maturity, previous success in operating in a safety and time critical environment and an absolute commitment to providing superior customer service.

About you

You will bring a mature approach, proven success in safety and time-critical environments, and an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional customer service. You thrive in independent roles and excel under pressure.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

Completion of Year 10 or equivalent

Valid Victorian Driver's License

24/7 availability for shift work

Cash handling

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Ability to work within rules and compliance frameworks

Friendly customer service skills

Strong safety awareness

Due to Fatigue Management Considerations, successful candidates will need to reside within 1 hours travel time of the Seymour Depot.

You will gain a Cert 3 in Customer Rail Operations across 4-5 weeks in Melbourne and then have an additional 2-3 weeks completing On-The-Job training at your Home Depot. Whilst completing both of those, you will be on a Conductor Trainee ($35). Once qualified your rate will be as Conductor ($47.52), plus loadings & penalty rates in line with V/Line Rail Operations and Administration Employees Agreement 2023.

The recruitment and selection process may include aptitude assessments, behavioural and/or technical interviews and employment references. These assessments may commence during the application period.
