Saunders & Ward is a Tasmanian owned steel fabrication and general engineering business established in 1922. We operate fabrication and machining workshops on a jobbing bases, engaging in the manufacture, repair, refurbishment, erection/installation and maintenance of industrial equipment to the power generation, mining, minerals processing, aquaculture, water and general engineering industries.

We have modern well-equipped facilities and an experienced workforce producing quality small to large scale industrial components out of our Kingston based facility. We currently have an opportunity for a Machine Shop Manager to join our team. The position is responsible for production planning and efficient day to day running of the machining workshop. It requires the job holder to manage resources and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure work is completed as planned.

Key accountabilities responsible for efficient workflow in an industrial jobbing environment. To manage a range of workshop jobs from estimate, procurement, manufacture and close out. To actively promote safe work methods and contribute to a safe work environment by applying and reviewing safe work practices. Ensuring that work is completed on-time, within budget and to quality standards.

Communicating with customers, suppliers and employees at all levels. Building relationships with key customers and vendors such as subcontractors and suppliers. Prepare quotations based on accurate estimates of labour and materials required for the manufacture of machined components. Preparing and maintaining project documentation and quality records. Reporting on work in progress and planned work.

Identifying production issues and developing solutions. Responsible for maintaining a clean and organised workshop environment. Identify training needs and implement training opportunities. Monitor and review performance of workshop personnel. Support and ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures. Managing preventative maintenance of plant and equipment.

The successful candidate will ideally have experience with and possess the following skills and attributes workshop planning and project management. Strong knowledge in conventional and CNC machining. Effective communication and leadership. Strong organisational skills and time management. Computer literacy. Strong problem solving. Estimating and procurement. HR and OH&S management.

The successful candidate must have/be safety, quality and productivity focused. Able to provide technical support to the machining workshop. looking for a long-term opportunity. Mechanical trade certificate. Experienced with managing workshops or in similar type roles.

Ability to prioritise and manage time appropriately. Able to maintain positive relationships with customers and suppliers. The ability to manage and coordinate multiple workshop projects effectively at the same time. Good communication skills. Permanent Australian residency.
