About the business Heron Ship Repair Limited is one of New Zealand's most experienced ship refit and repair specialists providing ship survey, repair and refit on a varied range of marine vessels. Heron Ship Repair is based in Port Road, Whangarei.

About the role the Slip Yard Assistant position will be responsible to the Slip Master and will be required to undertake a variety of roles and responsibilities pertaining to the slipway, wharf and yard. The successful applicant is required to work as part of a team and autonomously at times. Hours are 7.30am – 4.00pm, Monday – Friday.  Overtime and weekend work as required.

Main responsibilities assist with setting up the slipway for hauling vessels. Set-up of the vessel once it has been hauled or berthed (lights, ventilation, power supply, water, fire equipment, welding machines etc). Cleaning and maintenance of the slipway cradle, slipway area, wharf and general yard cleanliness, Collection of garnet.

Working with and assisting different trades’ people when required – Dogman, cleaning, grinding and tacking, assembly of equipment, retrieving goods and parts from the store. Tank and bilge entry and cleaning when required for hot works. Fire Watch and Safety Observer. Loading outward goods and unloading inward goods. Delivery and pick-up of goods as and when required.
