Senior Counsel Robert Walters location Wellington.
TAB New Zealand is responsible for securing and delivering vital funding for racing and sport in New Zealand. TAB NZ has entered a 25-year strategic partnering agreement with Entain for the delivery of betting, broadcasting and gaming, and is now establishing its future operating model.
The new TAB NZ operating model focuses on several key areas, including Entain's contractual performance (from both commercial and compliance perspectives), stakeholder engagement, financial management, and the delivery of TAB NZ's retained functions under both the Racing Industry Act 2020 and Gambling Act 2003 - including TAB NZ's Class 4 gaming activities.
About this role the Senior Counsel will ensure that TAB NZ staff receive timely, proactive, pragmatic and solution-oriented legal services so that they can safely deliver on the commercial, strategic, and operational goals of TAB NZ, including reviewing, drafting, negotiating and summarising various commercial agreements that TAB NZ is or may be party to supporting the monitoring of Entain's commercial and regulatory performance under the Strategic Partnering Agreement
Advising TAB NZ of its obligations, and compiling responses as required, under the Racing Industry Act 2020, Official Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 2020, and any other relevant legislation. Performing the duties of Company Secretariat where you will get exposure to high performers on the Board and be able to make this role your own. Providing input to the CEO and other senior TAB NZ management on commercial, government and regulatory matters.
Assisting the Board, CEO and other senior TAB NZ management on its strategic goals. Monitoring case law and legislation, and their impacts on TAB NZ. Provide ancillary support to the CEO, including peer reviewing the work of other TAB NZ staff and drafting letters and formal documentation as required.
This role is full-time but flexible work options will be considered, including part-time. Ideally, you will be based in Wellington or Auckland, but TAB NZ will consider someone working remotely from other areas of NZ for the right person. About you 3-7 years' post-admission or a mix of legal and other relevant experience. Demonstrated experience in regulatory or commercial law. Although not essential, if you have experience in gambling, racing or sports (or a love of it), that will be a bonus
Excellent written and oral communication skills - you need to be able to write succinctly and get relevant points across. Strong interpersonal skills. Flexible, adaptable and reliable with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise. Love being part of a team. Qualified lawyer that holds or is able to obtain, a current practising certificate.
