About the role we are currently looking for a senior associate to join our growing construction team on a part time or full time permanent basis. If part time, you must be able to commit to a minimum of 4 days per week. Our practice provides the opportunity to do a mixture of front and back end construction law and projects work, but our focus for this role is on the front end. Back end experience is a bonus, but is not required for the role. To be successful in this role you will ideally have at least 5+ years of predominantly non-contentious construction experience at a well-regarded firm or sophisticated in-house environment. You will be commercially astute, have a strong eye for detail and be a team player. In addition, you will have a demonstrated willingness to build effective relationships with blue chip clients. This role will be part of a team including our two Sydney based Construction partners Sandra Steele and Simon Ashworth, as well as a special counsel, two senior associates and a junior lawyer. Sandra has more than 20 years' experience advising on contentious and non-contentious construction law matters and is recognised as one of Australia's leading lawyers in Construction/Infrastructure Law (2019 Best Lawyers).  She has extensive experience in contract drafting and negotiation as well as litigation and alternative dispute resolution in the project management, construction, engineering and infrastructure project sectors. Prior to joining K&L Gates, Sandra spent 6 years as the Assistant General Counsel for Lendlease Project Management & Construction (Australia) Pty Limited. Sandra was voted Construction & Infrastructure Partner of the Year at the inaugural Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards in 2016 and was a finalist in 2017 and 2018. Simon is a projects and construction lawyer and he advises consortia, contractors and construction companies on a wide range of infrastructure procurement in both Australia and New Zealand.  He has acted on numerous other projects in Australia and New Zealand, including Sydney Light Rail PPP, the Social and Affordable Housing Fund 2, various road, train, water, prison, student accommodation and school PPPs and other projects, and the contract for Australia's new Antarctic Icebreaker. Simon is highly regarded in the market as one of Australia's leading practitioners and is recognised by Chambers Asia Pacific (2017 – 2019), Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2017 – 2019) and Best Lawyers (2015 – 2019) directories for his expertise. In addition, Sandra and Simon are the co-Chairs of K&L Gates National Diversity Committee. What does the role involve drafting, negotiating and advising on construction and projects documentation, working with clients to provide innovative solutions to complex and novel issues, providing practical advice to clients navigating the complexities of project delivery, active participant in business development and client relationship activities, develop the capacity of colleagues to deliver high quality legal advice through on the job training and supervision, team meetings and matter de-briefs, contribute to the firm's learning and development program in area of specialty, contribute knowledge and learning resources, including precedents, manage finances including assisting with estimates and preparation of invoices, collection of fees as directed, we look to recruit talented people, then provide the opportunities and support for them to achieve their best.
