Research Assistant Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute location Melbourne. Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is an independent, internationally renowned medical research facility. Our work extends from the laboratory to wide-scale community studies with a focus on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. About the role this is a full-time position for a highly motivated and talented research assistant with the ability to learn and master several research technologies, including recombinant protein production for testing of novel and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches such as in thrombosis, atherosclerosis, and myocardial infarction. The Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology Laboratory research includes methodologies such as histology, flow cytometry, biotechnology (including protein production), molecular imaging (with various imaging technologies such as ultrasound, PET, CT, MRI, fluorescence imaging and intravital microscopy), and various animal models. Duties assist in recombinant protein production, perform histological and immunohistological tissue preparation, staining, microscopy as well as critical data analyses, share responsibility for laboratory maintenance including administrative tasks such as data management and inventory maintenance, aid other group members in developing improved techniques or procedures, perform cell biological and molecular techniques in particular flow cytometry, immunoblotting, elisa as well as rt-pcr, prepare materials for reports to be written by grant principals and staff on the research project, collect tissue and culture samples, stain and prepare slides and perform tests and assays, perform and assist with preclinical models in particular, tissue collection followed by cell isolation and preparation for surgical procedures, calibrate and/or operate various laboratory equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges, cameras and measuring devices, perform serological, immunological and immunochemical tests for diagnoses of disease, assist in ensuring volunteer subjects are aware of the procedures that are being done so that proper informed consent is obtained, ensure there is adequate documentation for each study, instruct assistants in laboratory procedures and techniques; requisition of supplies, specimens and materials. Skills and Experience academic knowledge of a health science discipline, such as biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, or biotechnology. The ability to translate, adapt and apply the knowledge that is generally associated with a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and progressively accumulated experience is essential. Preferred experience include relevant undergraduate degree, graduate diploma or equivalent research experience, can perform beginner level research in a health science field or discipline including research experience in histology, animal work, flow cytometry, molecular biology and biochemical techniques, a high level of interpersonal skills, which enable the appointee to liaise effectively with a wide range of people at a variety of levels internal and external to the baker, a background in classical wet lab techniques is required, such as elisas, molecular biology, flow cytometry, microscopy and mouse handling, the ability to work with independence and as part of a team working closely with our post-docs, generating high quality, reproducible data for publications and presentations.
