Position summary a vacancy exists for a motivated Biomedical Research Assistant for a project on the role of the kynurenine pathway in stem cells development. This is part of a larger program to study the biology of this pathway in multiple sclerosis (MS). The successful candidate will be mainly involved in examining kynurenine pathway profiling in MS using animal models and oligodendrocyte cell cultures. The position would be suited for an early career postdoc with previous experience working on the kynurenine pathway in MS.

This work will be undertaken in the Lowy Packer Building which is part of the integrated St Vincent’s Hospital Research Precinct in Darlinghurst and employs approximately 80 research staff engaged in aspects of cell biology, molecular biology, immunology and virology.

The vacancy is open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens who hold a valid New Zealand passport, Australian permanent residents and those non-residents deemed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to be eligible to work in Australia only.

Selection criteria personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia. Tertiary scientific qualifications (minimum of BSc, or equivalent, in biomedical field). Biomedical research laboratory experience with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Data management, statistical analysis and computing skills.

Relevant experience tissue culture, flow cytometry, Western blot and molecular biology assays.

Experience in adult stem cell research and immunohistological techniques particularly in the neurosciences Experience with stem cells and oligodendrocytes cultures with a basic knowledge of the kynurenine pathway and tryptophan metabolism. Experience with animal models of multiple sclerosis (MS), animal handling, monitoring and surgery/dissection. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records.
