Research Assistant Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute location Melbourne. Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is an independent, internationally renowned medical research facility. Our work extends from the laboratory to wide-scale community studies with a focus on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. About the role this is a position for an experienced research assistant with previous work with mice and molecular biology techniques. Ideally with some background in cardiac biology and assessment of cardiac function with scope of interest including lipidomics and the assessment of new therapeutic strategies. The Cardiac Hypertrophy Laboratory focuses on understanding heart enlargement, cardiac hypertrophy, through comparisons between models of health and disease: examining the enlarged athletic heart (physiological hypertrophy) in comparison to heart enlargement associated with disease (pathological hypertrophy). Current therapeutics are largely treating heart failure by delaying disease progression. The goal of this team’s research is to improve function of the failing heart and protect it from complications such as atrial fibrillation. Duties assist with mouse studies, conduct molecular, cellular and biochemical experiments, analysis of data, demonstrate an ability to meet deadlines without compromising close attention to detail and accuracy, assure compliance with affirmative action and safety programs, experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures, proactive attendance at team meetings and attendance at all relevant seminars and staff meetings, advice within the field of research to postgraduate students. Skills and experience academic knowledge of a health science discipline, such as microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy, pathology or biomedical science or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible work experience. Preferred experience include research experience in mouse handling, molecular biology, background knowledge of cardiac biology and heart disease is desirable, understand own area of research, and how this team interacts with other directly related groups within the research programme, a high level of interpersonal skills, which enable the appointee to liaise effectively with a wide range of people at a variety of levels internal and external to baker, demonstrated ability to participate positively in a team, excellent planning and organisational skills, including the ability to manage a range of tasks with conflicting priorities, demonstrated ability to meet deadlines without compromising close attention to detail and accuracy, proven ability to work as a member of a team as well as on own initiative without close supervision, demonstrated ability and willingness to take initiative and to improve and enhance existing systems and procedures (quality assurance).
