About the role the New Zealand Police is seeking to appoint a full time permanent Armourer within the National Organised Crime Group based at Ellerslie in Auckland. An Armourer in this position within New Zealand Police will be responsible for supporting the National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) and New Zealand Customs Service (NZCS) with identifying, evaluating and assessing firearms, firearms parts and related material to identify illegal firearms imports and trends; provide evidence to identify firearms, firearms parts and related material for investigations and criminal proceedings. Evaluating, repairing and modifying Police service firearms, Tasers, and accessories as well as providing technical advice to various Arms Officers, Firearms Licensing and other Police Staff.

Key accountabilities work in partnership with New Zealand Customs Service, Te Tari Pūreke (Firearms Safety Authority) and aligned agencies. Conduct day to day examinations of firearms, firearms parts, ammunition and other firearms related ancillary items at the New Zealand border and provide expert knowledge to ensure legislative requirements and permit conditions as applicable are adhered to.

Support the gathering of intelligence on firearms, firearm parts, accessories and ammunition with respect to importation, unlawful possession or use in conjunction with criminal offending; to assist with the build-up of detailed knowledge on emerging trends, threats and security risks, whilst informing compliance and safety initiatives. Conduct examination of firearms, firearms parts, ammunition and firearms related material and documentation for the NOCG Firearms Investigation Team (FIT); provide expert knowledge to support investigations and diversion enquiries.

An ability to identify then underlying causes of problems, assess key issues and make good judgements and decisions. An ability to structure logically and portray ideas clearly in written work, a strong customer focus and an ability to work as part of a focused team and maintain communications with external agencies. Inspect, repair and modify all Police firearms on a regular basis including visits to districts.

Recognised NZDF Armourer qualification or similar. Full Class 1 Drivers License. Demonstrate the necessary knowledge and experience relevant to the position. First Aid Qualified. Salary this position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $87,401and $101,687 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
