Join us to shape the future of one of Australia’s greatest natural assets and protect it for future generations.
We are seeking people who want to contribute to a significant water reform program that aims to respond to the impacts of climate change, support community and industry needs, and improve access to water for First Nations people.
The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency.
The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

Our purpose and values
‘Rivers for Generations’. This is our purpose – it leverages our experience and expertise in river operations, ecology and hydrology, the environment, community engagement, engineering, water policy and regulation. It calls us towards more sustainable solutions, relationships, mindsets and outcomes. It animates us at every level of the organisation and ultimately it helps call forward others who also share a vision for what the future can be.
We embrace the management of the Murray-Darling Basin. We know that it is an important, iconic national and international treasure. And we embrace responsibility for its stewardship with pride, care and confidence… endorsing and standing behind the important ICARES values of the Australian Public Service.
Because of our unique context, we are also mobilising behind three values unique to the MDBA. They describe how we need to show up and be if we are to be at our best and most purposeful. They represent the best of us. They guide us, bind us and stretch us as we work to learn, grow and increase our impact. We aim to live up to these values in every interaction with each other, and with the people, the communities and the environment we touch and serve.
Our values, just like our purpose – acknowledges the connectedness of all things in the Basin and the complex and diverse nature of the work we do in service to its health and sustainability, both now and into the future.
We acknowledge the connectedness of all things in the Basin, from forest to farm, headwaters to the sea, past to present to future… and that is why we know the importance of…
Being in COMMUNITY… understanding, listening, connecting, strengthening and sustaining relationships.
We know our eco-system and the challenges we face are complex, diverse and fast changing… and that is why we know the importance of…
Being COURAGEOUS… speaking up, articulating what we do, standing for our beliefs, voicing concerns and taking ownership.
We recognise the importance of what we are doing and that there will always be obstacles to overcome and new pathways to find… and that is why we know the importance of…
Bringing ENERGY… strengthening, focusing, empowering and enlivening us to develop and learn new and ever more effective methods, skills and approaches to our work.
