Marine Engineering Officers (MEO) are the Navy’s experts on ship structure, propulsion, power generation, hydraulic and habitability systems. MEOs onboard ship lead teams of skilled hands on technicians who operate, maintain and repair this diverse range of equipment. The MEO is the critical decision maker in the ship’s response to fire fighting and damage control.

A diverse range of shore based positions include management of complex projects, equipment procurement, ship system and physical upgrades, and performance analysis. Your career will be managed so that you are rotated regularly through these roles, ensuring you develop a broad understanding of marine engineering. Professional development is a key part of a MEO’s career.

Basic Training Upon successful enlistment into the Navy you will be posted to HMNZS PHILOMEL for Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT). Here you will do 24 weeks of military training in various subjects including Organisation and administration, RNZN customs and protocol, Drill and parades, Seamanship and weapons training, First aid, Physical fitness, Team work and self discipline, Leadership training, Communication training, Defence and Strategic studies.

After you have completed JOCT you will move on to trade-specific and on-the-job training as a MEO. MEO trade specific training is overseas. You’ll either complete the Systems Engineering and Management Course (SEMC) at Gosport, UK, or the Marine Engineering Application Course (MEAC) in Melbourne, Australia. These courses are 6-8 months long and there are sometimes opportunities to partake in an exchange with the Royal Navy or Royal Australian Navy on successful completion of the course. SEMC and MEAC are recognised as professional development towards registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Qualifications and eligibility Direct Entry, BE(Hons) or BEngTech specialising in either Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Chemical, Process, Materials, or Electronics Engineering.

Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance and a minimum of 18 credits in Level 3 Calculus and Physics. 18 years or older on the day you enlist.

All roles free of any criminal convictions and meet citizenship and security requirements to obtain a Top Secret Vetting (TSV) security clearance. Colour perception restrictions may apply. Medically and physically fit.

Benefits competitive salary:As a recruit in JOCT you will earn approx. $37,000, however food, accommodation and training is provided. Upon graduation from JOCT you will move up to approx. $74,000 as a university graduate. Your salary will continue to rise as you move up the ranks and gain experience. Uniform: All clothing and equipment requirements are provided at no charge. Accommodation and food: There is accommodation available on most bases, you will receive an accommodation allowance after 3 years service, and all bases have catered dining halls.

Security you must be a NZ Citizen or hold an NZ Permanent Residency Visa for this position, and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance. If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
