The Role
Based at Killaloe Transfer Station near Port Douglas in Far North Queensland, this is a hands-on role leading daily site operations. As the Leading Hand, you will work alongside a small team to ensure the smooth running of the transfer station. This role requires you to actively participate in operational tasks and operate machinery on site as needed, while providing day-to-day guidance and support to team members.

What You’ll Do

Carry out and lead day-to-day transfer station operations, including waste handling, sorting, and machinery operation
Ensure safe, efficient, and compliant site practices through hands-on leadership
Coordinate daily tasks and work closely with team members to meet operational goals
Operate site equipment and machinery as required (e.g. loaders, compactors, forklifts)
Supervise all transfer station operations, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance
Oversee WHS and environmental compliance including inspections, toolbox talks, reporting and incident management
Monitor and report on site performance, productivity, and environmental impact
Liaise with drivers, mechanics, and subcontractors to ensure timely and safe service delivery
What You Bring

Proven experience in waste, logistics, civil or heavy industry operations, ideally in a council transfer station or similar environment
Practical experience operating heavy machinery — excavator ticket and MR licence highly regarded (we can get them the tickets)
Solid understanding of WHS, environmental, and fatigue management requirements, with a commitment to safe work practices
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to guide and support co-workers on the job
Confident working in a hands-on role where you lead by example and help keep the team on track
Comfortable assisting with basic planning and on-the-ground decision-making
Familiarity with basic computer tasks (e.g. completing reports or using email – Excel/Word/Outlook)
Can-do attitude and motivation to take ownership of daily site operations
We Offer

A hands-on leadership role with a salaried position
Flexible working hours, Monday to Thursday, 9.5 hours per day, with start times between 7:30 AM and 6:30 PM
Long-term career development opportunities within a global organization committed to sustainability
A supportive, safety-first culture that values investment in people and processes
Ongoing training and professional development, including assistance in obtaining necessary machinery operation tickets for the right candidate
