About this role at Customs, our purpose is to protect and promote New Zealand across borders. We stop threats entering New Zealand - anything that might harm New Zealanders and their livelihoods - and help protect and grow New Zealand's economic prosperity. This role will be charged with amplifying Customs' mahi through co-leading the development and implementation of its communications and engagement strategy.

What you'll be doing you will play a lead role in a close-knit, virtual team that's geographically spread across Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin whose skillsets and focus include internal and external communications, stakeholder and public engagement, media engagement, content creation as well as digital channels and publications management.

You will drive the ongoing enhancement of proactive communications opportunities, and supporting policies and guidelines, with a specific Digital Channels focus. As a skilled lead advisor, you will also ensure mentorship support and guidance to your team as second in charge to the Communications and Media Manager.

As an experienced communications practitioner, you will enjoy working with a certain level of autonomy that includes ownership over specific portfolios and relationships within Customs. While prior experience within public sector communications will be advantageous, we are seeking someone with the right mindset and an ambition to make a positive difference. About you you are a people-person who understands the value of building and enhancing positive relationships across all levels within Customs, with partner agencies, media and the public. You are a strategic thinker, with a great eye for detail, who can develop high quality communications plans and deliver on its tactical implementation to achieve desired results.

You are a compelling storyteller with exceptional writing skills, and the ability to articulate complex projects or initiatives into clear and engaging narratives. You have a sound understanding of managing digital channels, including websites and social media, and strive to ensure user-experience is the main priority.

You enjoy a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with the ability to remain calm under pressure and work through competing priorities, and dealing with complexity and ambiguity. Working for NZ Customs.

To join Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*. Due to the nature of Customs' work all candidates must have a clear Police record. Security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs before job offers are made. Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test.

You must have resided in Aotearoa 5 years ago from the date of this application and have continuously resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years - or have spent short amounts of time in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or United States. You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
