About the role our Custody team are seeking motivated individuals to work in the Gisborne Custody Unit. Multiple Custody officer positions exist in Gisborne. Gisborne is a vibrant and progressive community. Also referred to as Tairāwhiti, Eastland and the East Coast.

The natural attractions include an extensive coastline of sandy beaches with renowned surfing breaks, bush and farmland. Both fishing/diving and hunting are a big part of life for many in the Gisborne region. The role of a Custody Officer within the NZ Police is pivotal. Custody Officers are responsible for providing care to detainees whilst they are in custody and during transit.

You will be responsible for ensuring the health and safety of the detainee, monitoring behaviour and state providing care and ensuing professional standards are continuously met. This role is not for the faint hearted and will require someone who is confident, open minded with attention to detail and willing to follow stringent safety procedures. The role will include transporting detainees to and from correctional facilities.

Key accountabilities strong communication skills both verbal and written. Resilience, perseverance with the ability to de-escalate situations in a calm and professional manner. Attention to detail. Accurate and precise, the ability to record and prepare information such as statements for court. Duty of care, understanding the welfare, health, safety and level of care required for detainees.

Strong team player, reliable, trustworthy, flexible to work shifts, weekends, public holidays. Decisive, cool, calm and collected, you can think on your feet, using your initiative and work well under pressure. Good computer skills and are comfortable learning new systems. You will be required to input and update data accurately in Police Systems, accurate typing abilities are essential.
