Description

Histology Technical Assistant or Research Assistant The Bionics Institute location Melbourne.

The Bionics Institute aims to improve lives by translating research into clinical outcomes. Our vision is to lead the world in innovative health solutions through research, development and translation. Based on our original work with the highly successful cochlear implant, we are now developing a range of advanced bionic and drug delivery devices to treat a broad range of medical conditions. Our goal is to deliver benefits to people living with challenging health disorders by translating and commercialising our research outputs.

We are seeking an individual to join our team, working on projects aimed at developing drug delivery technology to treat hearing loss, improving outcomes for cochlear implant recipients and developing new bionic technology using new optical stimulation techniques. This position is suitable for a candidate at a Technical Assistant level or at a Research Assistant level, and we welcome applications from candidates at both levels.

The Research assistant level position will collect and analyse data for histology projects and take a proactive role in running projects, technique development and contributing to publications. This role will work independently contributing to the setup of new projects and project managing, including the supervision of staff on specific projects. The incumbent will be able to produce high quality research data in a timely manner.

To be successful in this position you will need substantial work experience in a research environment with an honours degree in science or biomedical science (or masters) in a relevant field such as pathology, neuroscience, developmental or cell biology.

Demonstrated experience in immunostaining, histopathology, microscopy, image and data analysis required. Demonstrated experience in dissection and immunostaining whole mount tissue preparation.  Dissection and immunostaining of tissue culture or molecular biology techniques is highly desirable.

The Technical Assistant level position is centred around processing and completing data collection. This role will work independently on a day to day basis with guidance from senior staff. To be successful in this position you will hold (or be close to completion) a diploma of lab technology / biotechnology / histology or an undergraduate degree in science in a related field.

You will have some exposure to a laboratory work environment but this could have been achieved through a student placement or similar. Knowledge of, or experience in, immunohistochemistry, histopathology and microscopy is highly desirable. Both roles include occasional work at weekends or out of normal business hours.

This position will be based at our laboratories within St Vincent’s Hospital in Fitzroy. The centre has excellent research facilities and provides the opportunity to work with leading researchers and clinicians in the field of bionic devices and drug delivery technology.
