About the role the purpose of Arms Safety and Control (ASAC) is to enable New Zealand to be a world leader in firearms safety through an effective regulatory and administrative approach to the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. The purpose of arms staff is to contribute to Our Business by being the safest country one in which people are safe and feel safe by ensuring the safe use, possession and control of firearms.

As an Arms Vetter you will directly support the District Firearms Licensing Team primarily by interviewing firearms license applicants and other persons, to determine an applicant’s suitability to be issued with a New Zealand firearms license. Firearms Vetters’ generally start duty from home but have support at local police stations and from the national firearms team.  They are required to travel within their area to visit license applicants and referees in their homes to assess the security setup of the firearm and suitability of the applicant to ensure they are reaching the required criteria.

This will often involve weekend and early evening work key accountabilities interviewing applicant and referees for a firearms licence. Inspecting firearms security in private premises. Inventory checks of firearms held by dealers and endorsement holders (eg, pistols and restricted weapons). Consistent and efficient processing of applications and reporting on security of each license application

You will need strong interview and report writing skills. Ability to be a self-starter, work with minimal supervision, manage appointments and respond to takings in a timely manner. A full NZ driver’s licence. A reliable vehicle (mileage is reimbursed).  Unmarked police vehicles can be made available for use outside of normal business hours.

Competency in the use of an iphone and laptop (software used includes Microsoft Office 365; Word, Outlook and re-writable pdf forms). Ability to pass police background checks. Experience with firearms might be an advantage but is not necessary. This role is set at Individual Contributor level, this means your key purpose is “to deliver or enable others to deliver Our Business”.
