The Made in the Shade group unites Melbourne based venues and services owned and operated by Michael and Zara Madrusan: The Everleigh (2011), The Everleigh Bottling Co. (2015) Navy Strength Ice Co. (2015), Heartbreaker (2015), Connie’s Pizza (2017) and Bar Margaux (2019).

Made in the Shade is looking to appoint a General Manager/Financial Controller with experience in hospitality to lead a small finance team and the Heads of Department with their financial accountabilities and KPIs. You will run the business on behalf of the owners making use of your strong financial acumen, operations and people management experience and competencies.

A key focus will be to establish the strategic direction, with the owners, and provide guidance to the Senior Leadership Team to drive the delivery and achievement of group business operating goals, and financial targets.

The incumbent will achieve this by leading and supporting the senior leaders to effectively manage their teams, resource efficiency and effectiveness in accordance with desired quality standards and business plans.

With venues and warehouses in Melbourne’s CBD and inner west, with headquarters on Smith Street, Fitzroy, Made in The Shade is known for its commitment to quality, attention to detail, and is driven by a strong sense of purpose.

The successful candidate will bring well-developed management and leadership skills to this role as you take on the overall responsibility for success of the finance department, venues and services. You will be involved in implementing the business and marketing strategies as defined by the owners with the management of key staff, compliance, and health and safety a focus.

Key accountabilities include coach and mentor Senior Leadership Team. Responsible and accountable for the overall financial performance of the consolidated Group. Responsible for meeting or exceeding budgetary and agreed performance targets. Responsible for the planning and budgeting of current and future project.

In collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team and key staff, develop improvement actions to drive revenue and cost savings. Guard / control costs and expenditure. Analyse financial reports to identify and rectify issue. Prepare monthly Board reports, including actual results, variations from budget, full year forecast results.

Assist in developing the business cash flow, ensuring it adequately supports work activities. Motivate the team by creating a stimulating, positive and energetic work environment. Ensure that a Group training program is in place in collaboration with the Chief of Staff and HR resource.

Conduct regular performance appraisals for the Senior Leadership Team, identifying areas for development. Ensure any variations to budgets and forecasts are included in Management reports. Prepare financial/statistical reports/dashboards for Senior Leadership Team.

Coordinate annual capital budget and capital plan. Ensure approved capital expenditure budgets are always adhered to. Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation. Ensure compliance with all taxation requirements, including PAYG, FBT and GST Assist managers in receiving relevant education and expertise to achieve their financial accountabilities and assist the Directors by undertaking specific projects as required.

Key Selection criteria demonstrates well developed key management and leadership competencies. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or commerce; minimum 5 years post-graduate experience. Fully qualified CA or CPA. Experienced in the hospitality environment and working with several channels. Competent in Microsoft Office suite of products and Xero.

Well-developed analytical and communication skills. Has capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions. Adept at handling interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Detailed oriented. Well organised, efficient and effective. Friendly and welcoming disposition.
