The integrated model of multidisciplinary care within Cancer Services relies on a dynamic, appropriately qualified, and skilled team to support patients undergoing care in both the Inpatient and Ambulatory settings. A key focus is on Integrating Wellness and Supportive Care into standard care.
Upper Gastrointestinal Prehabilitation Service and Exercise@ONJ Centre
The Upper Gastrointestinal Prehabilitation Service, in collaboration with the Exercise@ONJ centre, includes medical, nursing and allied health professionals, including accredited exercise physiologists, clinical psychologists, dieticians and researchers with specialised knowledge in pre-surgical optimisation for those preparing for upper gastrointestinal surgery. This collaboration with the Exercise@ONJ Team focuses on delivering exercise-focused prerehabilitation within the Exercise@ONJ Wellness gym.
About the role
This role provides prehabilitation exercise physiology services to upper gastrointestinal patients who are preparing for cancer surgery. It is primarily outpatient-based and involves (a) delivering patient care through individual and group exercise sessions, (b) consulting with and contributing to the Upper Gastrointestinal multidisciplinary team, and (c) supporting the broader work of the prehabilitation service and the Wellness and Supportive Care Team.
A regular day will see you:
Deliver independent and group-based evidence-informed exercise physiology services for individuals with cancer undergoing cancer treatment within onsite and home-based settings.
Conduct and have experience with clinical exercise assessments (e.g., cardiopulmonary exercise testing) and devise tailored exercise interventions for outpatient pre-surgical candidates.
Work part of a multidisciplinary Exercise Oncology and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Team, including surgeons, medical oncologists, anaesthetists, nurses, dietitians and clinical psychologists.
Receive and support referral and triage activities with support from senior exercise oncology team staff.
Deliver comprehensive education and guidance to patients on managing their health conditions, actively engaging them and their caregivers in decision-making.
About you
As the Exercise Physiologist, you will have excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work and be keenly interested in developing your skillset.
To be successful in this role, you'll bring with you:
A Bachelor’s degree in Exercise & Sports Science and a Master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology
Current accreditation with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA)
At least five years of clinical experience as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist in early-stage and advanced oncology patients.
Recent experience with personalised exercise prescription and monitoring methods for higher-risk oncology patients with chronic and complex disease
At least three years’ experience performing, monitoring, or interpreting cardiopulmonary exercise testing with oncology patients.
Recent experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team, preferably in an acute tertiary-level hospital or research institute, working alongside medical, nursing, and allied health staff.
