Custody Officer or Jailer New Zealand Police location Tasman.

New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for reducing crime and enhancing community safety. We work in partnership with individuals, communities, businesses and other public sector agencies to achieve our vision of Safer Communities Together. Custody Officers are required to calmly and professionally process new detainees, monitor their welfare, prepare reports and court documents, update Police systems, provide meals and maintain security.

The position is responsible for ensuring detainees do not escape custody, which is particularly relevant whilst in transit. The nature of the role requires an ability to think on your feet, make quick appropriate decisions and deal effectively with unexpected situations as well maintaining a good level of fitness and the ability to defend yourself if necessary.

To support the delivery of these outcomes the Custody officer will ensure the safe, secure and humane containment and transportation of detainees within a Police custody environment, in accordance with established regulations and procedures; and assist in the provision of a Police Service which contributes to the maintenance of a safe, secure and lawful environment for the public through contacts at the Custody Unit. A custody environment is defined as any location where a prisoner is in Police custody (including but not restricted to; cells, courtroom, prison, hospital), and the transit between any of these locations.

Skills & experience demonstrate ability to work unsupervised in accordance with set procedure and policy. Demonstrate an ability to communicate with a diverse range of people. Demonstrated ability to work safely and ensure the safety of others under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Demonstrate computer skills in processing and receiving information.

Certification requirements this position holder will be an Authorized Officer warranted under s 24 (1) (b) of the Policing Act 2008. Authorized Officers will not be issued with warrants until the necessary training to ensure the employee is capable to undertake the role is satisfactorily completed. The successful applicants must hold a current first aid certificate in accordance with the relevant NZQA standards. Applicants must hold a current NZ class 1 driver's license.

Special Requirement - For selection purposes, candidate suitability will be considered in relation to potential to perform well in the position, given a reasonable period of time for familiarization and/or training. Personal attributes and temperament relevant to the position. General health which will allow for the performance of all duties and functions of the position (for constabulary employees a current PCT is an indicator of general health). A Core Children's Worker security Check is required.
