The New Zealand Institute for Minerals to Materials Research (NZIMMR) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief Science and Research Officer of the Institute. The Institute’s purpose is to research new economic opportunities from adding value to New Zealand's mineral resources, including low emissions technologies. This work supports the Government's Minerals and Petroleum Resources strategy for Aotearoa New Zealand 2019 - 2029, for promoting a domestic minerals industry.
General description of the role the Chief Science and Research Officer (CSRO) of NZIMMR is a dynamic leader who possesses an exceptional track record of research and scientific accomplishment, as well as solid management experience. The CSRO is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of NZIMMR’s minerals to materials research activities.
Working closely with the CEO to develop strategies and policies s/he will lead and support our team of scientists and technicians and be a brand ambassador for research and the organisation. The CSRO must be able to articulate and operationalize the bold research vision for the Institute. An important aspect of the role is facilitating and managing the Institute’s strategic initiatives and collaborations with various community, academic and industry groups. S/he must have a proven ability to lead high-quality scientific research, write grant proposals and co-ordinate projects conducted with partnering organisations.
Qualifications Holds a PhD, Understands how to ‘bridge the gap’ between research and commercial partnerships. Has experience as a researcher in materials science or related field and a quality track record of research accomplishment. Proven management experience in a science research setting. Has achieved measurable success in defining and leading the strategic direction of research organizations;
Has developed a strong network that stands to influence positively NZIMMR’s reputation and performance. Has a solid understanding of the full research value chain, from bench to bedside to business to community. Has proven success in increasing financial investments in research organizations and has the ability to influence and shape the science agenda for the Institute. Adaptive and resilient, s/he inspires others to push the boundaries of knowledge and science in open and collaborative ways.
