Avian Hospital Assistant and Outdoor Aviary Assistant BirdCare Aotearoa location Auckland.

BirdCare Aotearoa wild bird hospital (BCA) is a registered charitable trust dedicated to providing professional care and rehabilitation for sick, injured and orphaned wild birds in the greater Auckland area. Based at a large site in Green Bay, BirdCare operates a Department of Conservation approved avian hospital and rehabilitation facilities, handling around 6,000 birds per year. The centre is run by a small team of staff assisted by a larger team of volunteers.

Both roles are immediate start. The position of Hospital Assistant will be fixed-term during summer, with the potential for becoming permanent. The Outdoor Aviary Assistant will be fixed-term until 5th April 2024. Both roles are typically rostered on a 4 days on 4 days off schedule, however this can be negotiated if necessary. The applicant must have the right to work in New Zealand for the entirety of the contract.

The primary responsibilities of these roles include monitoring and caring for birds at the centre, including feeding, weighing, medicating and bird handling as needed. Notifying the Hospital Manager of any concerns about the birds. Cleaning and maintaining enclosures. Entering and updating records of the birds on the online hospital database. Supervising/working alongside volunteers.

The ideal candidates will be passionate about birds or wildlife, self-motivated, able to work under pressure, and will be respectful, kind, and compassionate towards the birds in care and the other people at the centre.

Training will be provided, however prior experience with handling birds will be advantageous. The applicant must be a fast learner, and physically fit and able to be active all day, including in all weather conditions.

These positions are available for an immediate start, therefore it is necessary to be a New Zealand citizen, resident, or have already secured the right to work in New Zealand and therefore hold a valid work visa.
