Assistant Customs Officers New Zealand Customs Service location Auckland.

We're looking for a number of fixed term Assistant Customs Officers (Maritime Border) to join New Zealand Customs | Te Mana Arai o Aotearoa across a variety of port locations. You'll be helping protect New Zealand's maritime border by providing advice, assistance, support and direction to crew, passengers and all persons working in port operations in order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 entering Aotearoa via ports and marinas.

Working across a 24/7 roster, assisting in the application of the Maritime Border Order at ports and marinas, you'll be actively monitoring compliance; reporting breaches where necessary and working with border partners, Police and port authorities to undertake enforcement action.

About this role monitoring ports via physical patrols, CCTV and other systems. Interacting with vessel crew and passengers - questioning and identifying any non-compliance with the Maritime Border Order. Informing and advising crew, passengers and port workers of the Maritime Border Order requirements should non-compliance be detected or suspected. Fostering cooperative relationships with stakeholders, agencies and colleagues to achieve Customs' objectives. This is a fixed term role until the end of 2021.

The annual base salary is $45,975 and on top that you will receive an allowance, dependent on location of $6,421-$7,942 per annum. It is not a 'nine-to-five' job. You'll work on a 24/7 roster, which means weekend work and unsociable hours including night shifts. Rostering patterns may vary from port to port. We understand the importance of life outside of work. We'll work with you to provide flexibility where we can, and support your work life balance.

We'll train you for the job we'll give you the training you need for the job. Successful applicants must complete 1 day's classroom training, and 1 day Officer Safety Training which involves learning how to de-escalate situations and provide self-defence. You will also receive 1 month's on-the-job training where you'll be buddied up with a Customs Officer. Training will be run in each port location.

Clearances [please read these requirements carefully] you must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by Customs towards a recommendation of suitability for an organisational security clearance. Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record and hold a full NZ Drivers' licence.

To work for Customs you'll need to be either a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident who has: continuously resided in New Zealand for the past 5 years - and resided in New Zealand 5 years ago from the date of this application or resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.

Medical and drug screen you'll need to be physically fit and able to pass a medical pre-employment examination and a have a clear drugs screen to enable you to work for Customs. You will also need to agree to receiving a COVID vaccine.
