Readings is an independent retailer of books, music, and more and has long been at the centre of Melbourne’s local literary scene, with a busy e-commerce website and eight bricks and mortar shops operating in Melbourne. We are looking for a technical assistant accountant to work on a permanent, full-time basis. The assistant accountant is responsible for maintaining the company's general ledger, banking, and cash activities, accurately recording and reconciling sales, managing creditor invoices and payments, and ensuring strict adherence to tax regulations. They also oversee payroll tax management, monitor cash flow, maintain the fixed asset register, and generate trial balances and financial reports. This position requires working closely with external auditors, handling accounting inquiries, and ensuring internal controls.

The incumbent is accountable to the CFO and requires a minimum of three years of experience, a relevant degree or certification, excellent communication skills, and proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office.

The ideal applicant will have demonstrated minimum 3+ years’ experience. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a certificate qualification combined with practical accounting experience, preferably in a retail setting. High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy in financial records, reconciliations, and reporting.

Familiarity with tax regulations and compliance. Organisational skills to maintain orderly financial records, documents, and reports. Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
