Assistant Accountant Jawun location Sydney.

Who we are Jawun is a not‐for‐profit organisation that uses the capabilities of corporate, government and philanthropic Australia to support programs of change in Indigenous communities. Guided by the strategies and priorities of Indigenous leaders and communities, Jawun seeks to foster long term partnerships that build sustainable capacity in Indigenous organisations and communities.

Jawun began facilitating partnerships between corporate and Indigenous Australia in Cape York in 2001. Led in the Cape by Noel Pearson’s agenda to break down the destructive passive welfare economy, Jawun has developed ways to support Indigenous peoples’ participation in the real economy. Through skilled people from our corporate and government partners, Jawun is a key supporter in the delivery of programs that foster self‐reliance, entrepreneurial activity and business planning amongst Indigenous people.

The Jawun model is transferable and today we work with remote communities in Cape York Peninsula (QLD), the Pilbara, East and West Kimberley (WA), Central Australia (NT, WA, SA) and Northeast Arnhem Land (NT), regional communities of Goulburn-Murray (VIC), Central Coast (NSW) Lower River Murray (LRM) and Far West Coast (FWC), the urban communities of Inner Sydney (NSW) and South West Australia (WA).  Jawun draws upon the best and brightest secondee resources from over 30 corporate and government partners in pursuit of Indigenous led change.  Our current partners can be found here.

Our Central Office team are based in Sydney’s CBD.  We typically offer a hybrid working environment, however in this role you will have the opportunity to work one day per month in our office (either Tuesday or Wednesday) and the rest from home if this is your preference. This will be possible once you have completed your initial training (when one or two days a week in the office will be required).

How you will contribute to Jawun’s purpose supporting a small Finance team, our Assistant Accountant will ensure the smooth flow of financial operations. Including managing payables, including invoice entry and payment processing. Handling receivables, invoicing, and follow-up activities. Completing bank-related tasks, such as managing bank feeds, reconciling transactions, and performing credit card reconciliations.

Our successful candidate will have prior experience as an Assistant Accountant/Bookkeeper in a small or medium size organisation. Solid understanding of accounting principles, bookkeeping practices, and financial regulations. A passion for change in Indigenous communities. An organised and outcome-focused approach to their work.
