About the role

We are seeking a proactive and capable Principal – Data Engineer to join our Data & Analytics team. Based in Leederville, this role will support the ongoing development and operation of our enterprise data platform and data engineering frameworks, tools and practices that help our business users manage, access and use data more efficiently and effectively.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced data engineer to lead the end-to-end development and maintenance of our data platform, designing scalable, secure data pipelines that transform raw data into trusted, analytics-ready assets. You’ll also champion best practices in code quality, DevOps, and testing, while collaborating closely with business and analytics leaders to accelerate data-driven decision-making.

What the role will involve

Lead and develop the data platform capability roadmap in collaboration with subject matter experts and in alignment with Water Corporation strategic objectives and compliance requirements.
Lead and quality assure the technical design, development and implementation of data platform capabilities and data pipelines, according to reference architecture and coding standards.
Ensure designed solutions are delivering the best outcomes for Water Corporation, with the best total cost of ownership throughout their lifecycle.
Provide technical leadership for the team to support, monitor and maintain data platform and pipelines to ensure their performance, reliability and security through-out their lifecycle.
Provide thought leadership, technical mentorship and coaching to data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Own and govern Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) process in support of high-quality software development across Data Analytic teams.
Key skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring a degree in a relevant discipline and extensive experience in software and data engineering, with substantial experience and proficiency in Python, Spark (PySpark), SQL, and modern ETL/ELT tools. You’ll have a proven track record in technical leadership and architecture with native cloud data platforms such as AWS, Databricks or Snowflake. Relevant certification will be desirable but not mandatory.

Expertise in Orchestration, MLOps and Infrastrcture as a Code (IaC), as well as DevOps and Agile practices is essential, along with hands-on knowledge of relevant tools and technology stacks.

Strong data architecture and modelling skills, combined with the ability to mentor others and communicating complex technical concepts clearly, will set you apart. Experience with enterprise data governance, BI platforms, and API integration tools is highly desirable.
