About the role immigration Border Operations facilitates the entry of legitimate passengers and keeps immigration risk offshore by working collaboratively with other teams in INZ and other border agencies. We also ensure risk is managed at the earliest possible point in the immigration process and provide assurance for the immigration system.

Border Officers undertake both pre-arrival and on-arrival functions within Immigration Border Operations. The role is critical not only for managing risk with the large volumes of people that come through New Zealand's border, but also for creating a positive first impression of New Zealand.

You will be responsible for assisting airlines, screening passengers intending to travel to New Zealand, making a determination regarding whether a passenger can board a flight to New Zealand, engaging with passengers on arrival, gathering information, investigating facts, assessing risk and making a determination regarding whether the passenger meets New Zealand entry requirements according to policy and legislation. You will be responsible for applying Immigration legislation and policy in a fair and firm manner.

Immigration Border Operations sits within the Border and Visa Operations branch of Immigration New Zealand (INZ), a group within MBIE. Border and Visa Operations play a critical role in ensuring quality and up-to-date visa and border entry decisions. We ensure INZ's visa decision-making offices (both offshore and onshore), and the border operations function effectively.

A training induction programme lasting 3 weeks will be held in either Christchurch or Auckland to enable you to carry out these tasks, and you will be required to travel for this period. This will then be followed by further on-the-job training in one of our airport offices.

Shift work and roster pattern all Border Officers are required to work on a rotating roster which includes weekends, night shifts and public holidays. You will be required to work an average of 40 hours per week on a rotating shift pattern that spans 24 hours/7 days a week operation. Your shift pattern may change regularly depending on training and operational requirements. The shift roster will be set by your manager. A large degree of flexibility is required and there are times that you will be required to work additional hours to complete the requirements of your role.

Lone working due to the nature of this role and the small size of our team in Queenstown, this role requires periods of lone working.

Salary, penal rates and benefits the base salary band is $75,114 - $88,266 and will be dependent on skills and experience. In addition to this you will earn penal rates for work outside normal work hours, and overtime for additional hours worked.

You are eligible for 4.6 weeks' annual leave per year. On top of your annual leave entitlements, as a shift worker you will also be eligible for shift worker's leave and alternative leave.

Skills and Experience required to be successful in this role you must be able to work successfully as part of a team. Flexible, adaptable and resilient in a dynamic work environment. Able to multi-task in order to achieve organisational objectives.

Communicates effectively with a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and socio-economic groups. Proven decision-making ability. Able to analyse complex information and apply legislation accurately. Confident using IT systems and able to learn how to navigate new software and online applications quickly. Experience in writing high level quality reports under pressure.
